Those physicians specializing in breast oncology work as part
of a multidisciplinary team at The Breast Health Center in The Center
for Advanced Medicine to diagnose and treat women with breast cancer.
Physicians within the section also are recognized as leaders in
caring for patients with thyroid and parathyroid disease. And they
treat disorders of the spleen, gastrointestinal cancers, melanoma
and sarcoma.
A number of procedures performed by Washington University endocrine
and oncologic surgeons – including those involving the stomach,
small and large bowel, and pancreas – are done using minimally
invasive techniques.
Cancer patients treated by these surgeons receive care at the Alvin
J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University
School of Medicine in St. Louis. The facility, considered one of the country’s
foremost cancer centers, was one of 39 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated
Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States when the designation was
announced on January 4, 2005.
